Hair Typing:

Hair typing is a chart used to determine one’s curl pattern created by Andre Walker. The chart ranges from numbers and letters: 1-4 and a-d. Type 1 is straight hair, type 2 is wavy hair, type 3 is curly hair, and type 4 is kinky and coily hair. Do determine your hair type, one should let their hair air dry after a wash. If your hair dries with no curl, you have type 1 hair. If your hair dries with with an ”S” curl, you have type 2 hair. If your hair dries with a loop or curl, you have type 3 hair.  If your hair dries with A zigzag pattern or tight curl, you have type 4 hair.

                                                         Hair Porosity:

Hair porosity refers to how well your hair absorb moisture and hair products. Hair porosity is determined by the structure of your cuticle, the outer layer of your hair. Hair porosity is characterized three groups: low, medium, and high.

-Low porosity: Hair cuticles that are close together.

-Normal porosity: Hair cuticles that are less tightly bound.

-High porosity: Hair cuticles that are more widely spaced.

To determine your hair porosity, wash your hair and body ate the same time and see which dries first. If your hair dries first, you have high hair porosity. If your body dries first, you have low hair porosity. If your hair and body dries at the same rate, you have normal hair porosity. Another method is using a cup of water and put a clean hair strand in the cup. If your hair sinks to the bottom of the cup, you have high hair porosity. If your hair floats in the middle of the cup, you have normal hair porosity. If your hair stays at the top of cup of water, you have low porosity hair.
